Much of the focus on sustainable health care is on prevention rather than cure. This means encouraging healthy eating habits and plenty of exercise, as many Health Maintenance Organizations and health “partnerships” are doing. Sustainable health should go beyond this as anyone can make common sense lifestyle and diet changes.

Government Policies And Health Care

All Government policies and regulations can have indirect impact on sustainable health solutions. For example, if shipping becomes unregulated to the point that rampant smuggling of goods and drugs are taking place across maritime borders, potentially devastating bugs could get loose, as was the case in a early outbreak of cholera in Mexico. Strong regulatory policing can help in many ways to prevent local food and produces from contamination by non-native species.

Changes to national health care system can be slow for some countries where government efficiency are weak, resulting in sluggish policies implementations. However, there is now increased pressure from infectious disease, causing governments to take serious and prompt actions in anticipation of national outbreaks. With worldwide climate change, there is migration of disease vector insects from warmer climate into formerly temperate zones. The yellow mosquito that can carry malaria is one example, as its range appears to be expanding.

Sustainable Health In Poorer Countries

There is urgent need for the governments of poorer countries to provide the enabling environment in which services for the poor by Non-Government Organizations and religious organizations to deliver health care to the poor in a sustainable way. This should include the regulation of services to ensure quality of care and thus minimize unnecessary duplication and unnecessary competition.

The government should include these organizations as partners in health care in all health policy formulation forums at the national, regional, and district levels. This partnership should result in the inclusion of the health services of organizations in national health budget in the form of staff provision and medical supplies.

Mountain people living at glaciers near the poles are the first places on earth that noticed something odd about honeybee behavior. Later this led to the baffling disappearance of whole hives of honeybees, which is now known as colony collapse disorder in North America.

Climate Change Affects Creatures And Human

Climatic change is a critical factor in the evolution of social behavior of these creatures. Among them are honey bees, bumble bees, carpenter bees, ants, termites, many wasps as well as certain kinds of shrimp and the naked mole rat.

Not only is climate change affecting the creatures, there is also increases in rates of skin cancers among mountain people world wide. A record of melting traces the beginnings of increased melting to about 1750 when the first industrial coal-driven applications were being devised half a globe away. It was not, however, until the industrial revolution that the pace of melting began to increase.

Human Error Worsen Climate Change Effect

A poor plan can easily be seen in South-eastern Alaska’s once mighty Sitka Spruce populations that formed a temperate rain forest. Forest ownership laws allowed people from out-of-state to own land in Alaska. Due to climate change, the Spruce Bark Beetle was able to spread unchecked through this natural near-monoculture of a mature forest.

The absentee owners allowed the pest to escape their site. It could have been, at least temporarily, contained by cutting away the host trees for a distance around the observed infestation. It was not and has since spread to nearly the entire state, leaving a scarred ghost forest in its wake.

Part of any plan to manage the massive resource of several different forest types must be a procedure for mitigating the effects of climate change. Plans for dealing with the aftermath of such a disaster, regular monitoring and protective measures are all part of a sustainable forest management plan.

The price of gas and the rising costs of groceries are perplexingly irrational. The cost of food is getting utterly ridiculous and there are problems with food shortages on a growing basis around the world. It’s scary when our dollar doesn’t stretch as far and an end isn’t in sight!

Our Dependent Of Oil Is The Cause

In recent years, massive increases in the price of petroleum have brought about food shortages in countries that were once thought immune to such concerns. While it may come as no surprise to some to see riots over food in traditionally unstable places such as Haiti, riots in relatively stable countries such as Egypt are very worrisome. In fact, even in North America, many are choosing between healthful food and rent for the first time in their lives.

But, could this be a sign of even graver things to come. It is a fact that the price of petroleum, both in terms of carbon dioxide emissions and market value, is going to rise. Even if there were an unlimited supply of the oil, the consequences of not curbing the use of these fuels will be simply unimaginable.

We Can Contribute Our Part

What can we do? It’s not expected to get any better unless something drastic happens to change the world’s dependence on oil. People are dependant on trucks to bring groceries and goods and on oil to get them back and forth to work and to their kids’ soccer games in their big fancy SUVs.

What else can we do? Not everyone can afford to switch to a hybrid today but really, we need to consider making changes now in order to lighten the load. Get a more efficient car as soon as we can, walk some more, car pool and buy groceries and products locally. Localized shopping is vital for change.

Climate change is deeply impacting the food chain, from agricultural production to land urbanization to food shortage. The effects go much deeper than the impact of unusual weather that we are experiencing.

Agricultural Infertility Caused By Climate Change

The drastic weather change at many places not only causes floods and droughts that affect the farming cycle, it is also highly unpredictable, sometimes going over an entire year of corps production. In some areas, unseasonable rains in the vegetable growing areas are causing massive outbreaks of fungus problems. In other areas, unusually warm winters can cause rodent populations to spike out of control.

A warmer climate also means that pathogens that have been more easily controlled in the past is becoming far more problematic. Some farmers are already abandoning their trade and their land as the weather is no longer suitable for farming. Late freezes are wiping out entire fruit crops and stress trees for years to come while other in other places, weather has become dryer and hotter.

Lesser Productive Lands

At the same time, the pressure to produce more on less land will become intense as land is taken out of cultivation to support cities and ecological migrants from coastal areas.

The bulk of the pressure on land around the globe, from precious wetlands to rainforests, comes from the agricultural sector. Deforestation for food production is generating even more greenhouse gas, affecting the food system. It is estimated that the destruction of wetlands and rainforests contributes to nearly 18 percent of the total global warming effect. The erosion and deterioration of soils on industrial farms also releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. By destroying the natural soil fertility, and disturbing the soil through tillage, industrial farming also adds to the deterioration of soil and its carbon emissions.

Panic Over Food Shortage

In a world of increasing affluence, the hoarding of rice and wheat has begun. Food shortages is taking place worldwide, the likes of which haven’t been seen for over a century in the most developed nations. Food shortages is casting a shadow across the globe, causing riots in Africa, consumer protests in Europe and panic in food-importing countries.

The word “sustainable” started in the ecology context when the early environmentalists seek to define alternatives in energy nad human practices. On farming, there was study permanent farming that would not destroy soil, water, or people. There was also concept of regenerative farming on how to help restore lands. Opinions differed greatly during that period about the key elements of “sustainability” in farming.

Concept Of Sustainable Farming

Sustainable farming is now commonly referring to farming that does not erode its own base of soil from chemical pollution or erosion. In addition, sustainable farming is also about farmers, their children and the irrigations. It encompasses bio-diversity in soil, quality of surface water as well as watersheds not contaminated by farm runoff. In some farming community, sustainability is also supported through members promoting freshly raised meats, homemade cheeses, or homegrown eggs.

Sustainable farming strictly follows the principles of returning organic nutrients to the soil through good farming practices, such as the judicious use of chemicals. Sustainable farming also tends to use far fewer energy inputs because it sources everything on-farm if possible. Water use is also reduced as compared with large-scale organic farming because of the small-scale intensiveness that is required.

More Than Adherence To Organic Standard

In farming countries there is now the adoption of National Organic Standard. It is a list of amendments and practices that are considered acceptable organic methods. What it does not take into account is the underlying principle of soil building in organic production or the use of carbon-emitting energy.

For quality food, we continue to need farmers on the land. The percentage of Americans now farming has dropped about as low as it can go. Organic management systems only help cut costs of modern soil inputs. For sustainable farming, we need more land to be returned to soil as nature’s gift and use it to grow our own food supply.

One of the main agenda for sustainable development is the cutting down of carbon emissions which is the main cause of increasingly chaotic climate. To combat climate change, international collaboration is required to change human practices to preserve the environment so that human needs can be met not only in the present, but in the indefinite future.

Violently Unusual Weather

Climate change will be here to stay for quite a long time. For this reason, we must be prepared to be amazed as weather chaos becomes even more violent and dangerous as the world tries to clear itself of this fever that human beings have caused.

It’s one thing to be in an area that is accustomed to getting severe storms. It’s quite another to live well outside the range of hurricanes and then wake up to a tropical storm bearing down. That is, however, exactly how some recent years have shaken out. Ask the folks who wrecked their cars trying to navigate a freak blizzard in Los Angeles or truckers that got stuck in the mountains during an early August white out.

Preparedness With Evacuation Plans

This is certainly true of folks who didn’t think to have a tornado escape plan for their trailer park. The same could be said of those who are experiencing more dry seasons and becoming acquainted with the fire seasons. Evacuation plans has to be setup and made compulsory if we want minimum loss of lives. The whole point is that you don’t know what could happen because the case of normal weather simply doesn’t apply anymore. For a long time to come, awareness and preparedness should be the key components of human efforts towards climate change.

With more people trying to share the smaller usable landmass, disposing of toxins in waste will no doubt be priority concern in the 21st century. The patterns of waste disposal in many developed countries are now under the scrutiny of sustainable development plans.

Risk of Toxic Contamination Increases With Climate Change

In areas that have already suffered rampant deforestation and hurricane damage, such as the island nation of Haiti, it is apparent why one shouldn’t assume that things once buried will stay that way. In that nation, the amount of erosion has caused major loss of life and property. This is even with the relatively small tropical storms that were already common.

There is a sharp rise in the number and intensity of named storms over the 150 years or so that records have been kept. The erosion in this island state has caused items that were once thought buried for good, such as decade’s old trash, to reappear on the surface and cause major pollution concerns. Of even more concern are the toxins, thought safe in a by-gone era are now escaping into the tropical environment.

Shedding Toxins With With Sustainable Replacement

By way of comparison, neighboring Dominican Republic has far more trees standing and has a much easier time weathering storms. Part of sustainable development to protect areas from toxic releases is the planting and tending of trees to protect against future disasters.

Sustainability isn’t just about avoiding the worst of climate change. It is also about keeping people healthy by monitoring and adjusting the diet, getting plenty of sleep and generally keeping disease at bay with vigor. One way to keep the body strong is to try and remove as many toxins as possible while keeping more from going in.

Meeting the technological challenges and researching the ramifications of climate change is a very important job. However, over the years, different research indicators of climate change were used and some of them have already come to pass.

University Research In Climate Change

Universities that are involved in climate change research usually engage a small army of graduate students and some university professionals to craft the experiments that result in useful data. These experiments are most often carried out by the system of grant applications and publishing. For this reason, industry and government alike have the ability to influence and direct research into areas they feel require more study.

Climate Change Research With Long Term Goal

In the case of industry, university researches in most cases are used by a particular business or trade to compliment their in-house research on a particular aspect of climate change. Unfortunately, in some cases, these researches are slanted with a business purpose to discredit a competing theory that would have dire business consequences. It is therefore important for the university to put in place a responsible audit function to ensure that all researches achieve the long term goal of sustainable development
