The concept was brought to life and named by The World Commission on Environment and Development in 1987.

Sustainable Development For Sustainable Growth

Since its conception, the concept of sustainable development for sustainable growth has become a major focus in the 1990s to the present time. The concept covers meeting economic, environmental and social needs of everyone without hurting anyone or anything in the process.

Sustainable Growth Is Economics Growth

What is economics related to sustainable growth? Sustainable growth would attempt to make sure that all people have enough to eat no matter what their income is. Whether you are well off or live in absolute or relative poverty, you would legally have the right and the ability to purchase foods to provide you and your family with an adequate number of calories each day to maintain health.

What is economics growth related to sustainable growth? Sustainable growth ensures that everyone in the workforce have a right to economic growth without undermining the environment, natural resources and the incomes of the next and future generations. Safeguards are put in place by the world government so that labor standards are put into effect along with mechanisms for compliance internationally. People that work with hazardous materials have rules to follow to keep themselves and the environment safe. People that work in high places must use safety equipment to ensure they don’t slip and fall. Accidents do happen; however, many times accidents are related to human error when the rules of safety are not followed correctly.

Sustainable Growth And Food

What is dairy and meat farming related to sustainable growth? Sustainable farming does not use practices such as giving antibiotics or hormones, and once processed, the meat cannot be irradiated. In factory farming animals are almost driven insane with fear and cramped conditions, but in sustainable farming the animals are treated humanely.

What is food service related to sustainable growth? Domestic foods are regulated by the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition which also regulates foods that are imported. Workers in the food service industry have people in place to educate and train all food handlers how to prevent food-born illnesses though applied safety measures.

What is food hygiene related to sustainable growth? Foods meant to be served cold must sit in ice when left in the open. Staff is responsible for recording the temperature of food, and if the temperature falls below the safe zone it must be discarded at once. All foods left out in the open for the public to serve themselves, such as in a salad bar or a buffet must have a shield between the food and the customers that serve themselves. This shield is to prevent contamination from people breathing, sneezing or coughing. This will prevent food-born illnesses is spread through food industry.

Much of the focus on sustainable health care is on prevention rather than cure. This means encouraging healthy eating habits and plenty of exercise, as many Health Maintenance Organizations and health “partnerships” are doing. Sustainable health should go beyond this as anyone can make common sense lifestyle and diet changes.

Government Policies And Health Care

All Government policies and regulations can have indirect impact on sustainable health solutions. For example, if shipping becomes unregulated to the point that rampant smuggling of goods and drugs are taking place across maritime borders, potentially devastating bugs could get loose, as was the case in a early outbreak of cholera in Mexico. Strong regulatory policing can help in many ways to prevent local food and produces from contamination by non-native species.

Changes to national health care system can be slow for some countries where government efficiency are weak, resulting in sluggish policies implementations. However, there is now increased pressure from infectious disease, causing governments to take serious and prompt actions in anticipation of national outbreaks. With worldwide climate change, there is migration of disease vector insects from warmer climate into formerly temperate zones. The yellow mosquito that can carry malaria is one example, as its range appears to be expanding.

Sustainable Health In Poorer Countries

There is urgent need for the governments of poorer countries to provide the enabling environment in which services for the poor by Non-Government Organizations and religious organizations to deliver health care to the poor in a sustainable way. This should include the regulation of services to ensure quality of care and thus minimize unnecessary duplication and unnecessary competition.

The government should include these organizations as partners in health care in all health policy formulation forums at the national, regional, and district levels. This partnership should result in the inclusion of the health services of organizations in national health budget in the form of staff provision and medical supplies.

Perhaps part of the reason that the debate about whether or not human actions have contributed to what could very well be a disastrous climate change are the predicted events that have already come to pass.

Climate Change Events Are At Our Doorstep

People all over the world are now experiencing the kind of extreme weather that was once experienced as events that only occurred every few centuries. Five hundred-year floods, for instance, have occurred in the Mississippi River Valley twice in the last twenty years.

Fire frequency threatens live, property and wildlife in the arid western part of North America at rates not seen in recorded history. Crop failures are up and pathogens are on the move. The price of food has skyrocketed and still the weather continues to just be strange all over the world. Perhaps most dramatic were the climate change events of Hurricane Katrina that saw a major US city nearly destroyed by a single storm.

Learning From Past Mistakes

How would we like to turn back the clock to a time before the polar ice caps started to melt? What about before there was a hole in the ozone layer? There are a lot of people who can think of many catastrophic environmental disasters that they’d like to avoid by getting into a time machine and altering poor decisions on climate change.

While it’s not possible to go back and make changes, we do have the power to change our future. Our destiny looks a bit bleak at the moment with the state of the world as it is. Climate change, pollution, climbing oil prices and food shortages are frightening. We have the power to buy better products, be better consumers, better parents and better citizens of the earth. We can get knowledgeable about the state of the earth and about what needs to change.

Early warning signs from climate scientists have had the writing on the wall for many years and now that terrible disasters have happened as a result, it’s time for people to take notice. Transitioning to a carbon free world is no longer a choice. Without dramatic change in the products we use and the way we travel, we will be in for dire consequences.

Knowing The State Of Our Planet

Are we environmentally conscious? Knowing there’s a problem is all well and good but doing something about it is even better. Doing something about it fast is actually a necessity with the state of our planet which is in grave danger. The status of the ozone layer, the melting of the polar ice caps and other environmental concerns are serious matters and the climate change is a direct result of the way we have treated our planet.

We’ve known for a long time that the environment was in danger because of the way we’ve treated it in the past. Not doing something about the state of the environment could continue to make the poor poorer and today’s environmental problems seem small in contrast to what’s to come due to inaction.

Taking Environmental Responsibility

Are we ready for the changes that are going to happen in the next 20 years due to climate change? It’s not too late to change things for the better although it is too late to get by unscathed because of our dependence on petroleum products. All of us must take the responsibility to understand more about the consequences of climate chaos and the factors that will accelerate climate change. This will then allow us to take responsible action in our own way to make an impact on the earth in a positive way.

Transportation, the food we eat, the energy we consume and other factors in our daily lives can all have a negative or a positive environmental impact. Whether we’re in urban or rural North America, Europe or somewhere else on the planet, every individual must equip with knowledge so we can make decisions that will support the planet for the future.

Lifestyles are not just a matter of behaving this or that way, but are basically an expression of people’s self-esteem. Lifestyles, therefore, are based on ideas with respect to the individual’s identity. Lifestyle denotes a set of basic attitudes, values, and patterns of behaviors that are common to a social group, including patterns of consumption or even anti-consumption.

Why Change Of Lifestyle Is Important

There are two reasons why change of lifestyles is able to fight climate change. First, consumption pattern which is an important factor in climate change has become an essential element of lifestyles in developed countries. Second, many environmental improvements through technological change requires the changes of lifestyle.

For example, traffic will reduce substantially if people change their preferences from cars to bicycles. This would alleviate climate change considerably if all the majority of affluent individuals in major cities in the world make this lifestyle change over few months.

Change Consumer Behaviors To Fight Climate Change

Climate change has adverse effects on people, food security, ecosystems, etc. Although global concerns on climate change and global warming have risen, leading to formulation of the Kyoto Protocol under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1997, yet it has to result in any unanimous acceptance among consumer groups and consumers.

Traditional fuel production and consumption contributes the most to climate change as it increases the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Some other primary activities like logging, mining of coal, oil and gas production, agriculture and aquaculture are also responsible for climate change. These increased concentrations on greenhouse gases have become a bane to the earth, trapping more heat thereby raising the average temperature of the earth’s surface and forcing climate change. This change in climate is threatening the biodiversity of fragile ecosystems. This situation is further aggravated by unsustainable consumption patterns. The continued promotion of consumerism by the industry through the use of mass media and advertising is spoiling the traditional lifestyle of consumers.

North Americans are very accustomed to viewing themselves as consumers rather than producers. Every time some commodity is consumed across a consumer base of over 300 million people, big changes are going to happen, for good or for ill. Whether that’s taking one aspirin or another actually can have serious ramifications. That’s the nature of large economies such as those that typify the most developed nations. This trend is partly responsible for the vast increase in the amount of petroleum energy used in recent years.

Promoting Change Of Lifestyle

Promoting sustainable consumption patterns can substantially enhance protection of the atmosphere. A major barrier to achieve these objectives is the low level of awareness among the lawmakers and people about the importance and severity of the impact of unsustainable production and consumption patterns and the resultant damage caused to environment and climate change.

One of the main agenda for sustainable development is the cutting down of carbon emissions which is the main cause of increasingly chaotic climate. To combat climate change, international collaboration is required to change human practices to preserve the environment so that human needs can be met not only in the present, but in the indefinite future.

Violently Unusual Weather

Climate change will be here to stay for quite a long time. For this reason, we must be prepared to be amazed as weather chaos becomes even more violent and dangerous as the world tries to clear itself of this fever that human beings have caused.

It’s one thing to be in an area that is accustomed to getting severe storms. It’s quite another to live well outside the range of hurricanes and then wake up to a tropical storm bearing down. That is, however, exactly how some recent years have shaken out. Ask the folks who wrecked their cars trying to navigate a freak blizzard in Los Angeles or truckers that got stuck in the mountains during an early August white out.

Preparedness With Evacuation Plans

This is certainly true of folks who didn’t think to have a tornado escape plan for their trailer park. The same could be said of those who are experiencing more dry seasons and becoming acquainted with the fire seasons. Evacuation plans has to be setup and made compulsory if we want minimum loss of lives. The whole point is that you don’t know what could happen because the case of normal weather simply doesn’t apply anymore. For a long time to come, awareness and preparedness should be the key components of human efforts towards climate change.

Developed nations are giving a great deal of direct and indirect aid to foreign nations, much of which is in the form of sustainable development initiatives.

Foreign Aids For Better Living

The concepts of sustainable development have been brought to some of the poorest places on earth, thanks to the generosity of wealthier nations. This invaluable source of funding has improved the lives of people throughout the world when human suffering would otherwise foment conflict.

Not all foreign aids are effective, with some efforts going down the drain as resources and wealth that could be shared more equally are benefiting much less people due to fragile political backdrop or irresponsible government practices. Nonetheless, over a long term and with better aids auditing, nations are better equipped to handle their resource rich future for sustainable growth.

Long Term Sustainable Growth

Successful long-term development is a complex process that depends on many factors. In most cases, two qualities seem particularly important: the quality of governance in a country will heavily influence its development; and adopting economic policies that promote growth will contribute significantly to development.

Without these qualities, foreign aid is much less effective in determining whether a country will achieve long-term sustainable growth and development. Foreign aid is likely to be the most helpful when it is given to countries that maintain stable, honest governments and have adopted market-oriented, outward-looking economic policies. For this reason, many foreign aids donors are now making it mandatory for countries to adopt positive political and economic policies. Countries that are unlikely or unwilling to make necessary political and economic reforms will face greater difficulties to obtain aids.

Migration away from storm, flood, fire and desert ravaged areas will cause great pressures on resources and natural environments. Island nations in South Pacific that are disappearing after inundation with rising sea waters are seeing mass exodus of their citizens. These environmental refugees can clearly attribute their troubles to global warming, caused by climate change

Environment Migration Is The Next Wave

Over the 1960s migration of populations is causing demographics changes. The massive amount of development in coastal areas over the whole world is now a cause to be worried. They are now the majority part of worldwide vast population of vulnerable people. It is thought that as many as 40% of the people on earth could be displaced if seas rose half as high as some estimates. Environment migration will be on the rise in this century.

Re-shaping Of Societies For Broken Nations

The movement of these environment migrants will have great impact to the places where they move to. People who are not used to being so closely crowded together will feel threatened. On the other hand, when the migrants from island nations founded on a given belief loose their homeland, they want to be able to settle at another place where they can freely practice their beliefs? Attempts at nation-building in the past have not met with resounding success, to say the least.

While there are still some naysayers who would claim that the warnings over climate change are just hot air, one of the direct consequences of climate change is the rise in sea levels and the reversal of productive agricultural regions into desert land. Climate change is leaving behind scars and marks in our environment and our nature.

Islands in Danger of Destruction

Observations since the mid-19th century, though convoluted, show a global average of about 20cm/8 inches in that time. Some coral atolls in the Pacific Island nations of Micronesia are already disappearing due to global warming. Some island nations that disappear beneath the waves within this century are: Maldives, Kiribati and Tuvalu.

The onsets of increasingly frequent and fierce cyclones or hurricanes are physically weakening the islands, causing them to sink bit-by-bit. To some island nations, even a 0.5cm/1/8 inch increase in sea level could half the nation. The most populous island threatened to be disappeared within the next 5 to 10 years is New Guinea and its mirror twin Papua New Guinea. Home to many of the last “undiscovered” tribes, many of their small islands are expected to be underwater by 2012.

Spreading Deserts In Agricultural Regions

The chaotic weather that typifies the direct impacts of climate change is causing worldwide weather transformation; leading to weather that is either far too wet or far too dry. There is no longer weather of a happy medium. As a result many areas are facing the threat of rapid and irreversible desertification.

The most evident of this is happening in China where the expansion of Gobi desert into formerly productive agricultural regions is taking place at uncontrollable speed. Even with a massive effort to stop the spread of sands, years of poor rainfall are enough to thwart these efforts.

Atmospheric Concentration Of Carbon Dioxide Causes Climate Change

Ice sample cores that can be tapped to track the composition of the atmosphere go back at least 800,000 years and give a portrait of carbon dioxide concentrations that have fluctuated on several additive cycles, with great changes during the ice ages. No one is still quite sure what causes an ice age to happen, but it was during this research in the 19th century that the relationship between carbon dioxide and the ability of the climate to trap solar heat. The levels of carbon in the atmosphere today are well outside the “norm”.

Primary Challenge Is To Reduce Carbon Dioxide

The primary effects of climate change are ripe for immediate action. The basic premises are to keep things from getting any worse. The biggest problem that needs to be tackled first is to reduce the contents of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. To that end, sustainable development in the 21st century must focus heavily upon reducing carbon dioxide emissions, not just back to pre-1990 levels, but to levels not seen since before World War Two.

Sustainable Development For The Long Term

The long term challenge of climate change is the protection of both human and natural life for sustainable development. This requires a very precarious balance to be reached in an era of dwindling resources. With the help of scientific study, world leaders and advisors must come up with attainable solutions for the continuity of human lives.
