The renewable energy industry involves many political, economic, environmental, and technological factors that interact with each other to influence marketplace trends. Industries that are related to renewable energy technology are creating many opportunities for both market players and job seekers.

Renewable Energy Industry In Agriculture

Perhaps one of the largest sectors in need of a sustainable revamping, organic agriculture has been at the forefront of sustainable development missions for many years. However, there is much more to sustainable agriculture. It seeks to meet human food and fiber needs while supporting human and natural ecosystems though practice and innovation.

Reducing nitrogen inputs that are mined or produced by the use of fossil fuels is a major part of sustainable farming. Water supplies are also maintained as carefully as possible to keep salts from building up in soils and being delivered most effectively to crop plant roots. While this includes many organic principles, some synthetic inputs and genetically modified crops are considered sustainable if they further the goals of reducing habitat loss and water usage while delivering competitive yields.

Each element in the sustainable agricultural system is weighed against the entire sustainable good and this analysis is done each year to account for all the variables. These systems can include anything from large diversified acreages or urban rooftop gardens.

Renewable Energy Industry In Biodiversity

Climate change and pollution are poised to further threaten biodiversity in the next century, with effects of this already being observed in frog and other amphibian populations. Several animals, such as bees, are part of a healthy eco-system that sustains human life as well as plant and animal life.

Escaped lab creations threaten plant populations with DNA that makes them less competitive in the wild. Plant breeders need an uncontaminated wild and heirloom populations of food crops from which to breed food strains that are suitable for cultivation in a changing climate.

Renewable Energy Industry In Biotechnology

Bio-tech also opens up many opportunities that are not so clear. What if chicken breasts could be grown in a lab? What if endangered animals that are ground up into ED cures were created in labs? Is it better to satisfy that need to save wild populations from over-exploitation or to create an even stronger demand for that commodity in the process?

The potential threat from bio-technology to the bio-diversity of regions of diversification worldwide has caused governments around the world to take technology slowly. Even countries that are receiving aid have elected not to accept GMO, as evidenced by African nations in the mid-90s.

Organizations assisting with sustainable development must consider what effect biotechnology will have on a given area before a solution tailored to North America is proffered elsewhere. By the same token, non-native plants and animals imported into North America can cause great damage that further threatens unique and local species.

The price of gas and the rising costs of groceries are perplexingly irrational. The cost of food is getting utterly ridiculous and there are problems with food shortages on a growing basis around the world. It’s scary when our dollar doesn’t stretch as far and an end isn’t in sight!

Our Dependent Of Oil Is The Cause

In recent years, massive increases in the price of petroleum have brought about food shortages in countries that were once thought immune to such concerns. While it may come as no surprise to some to see riots over food in traditionally unstable places such as Haiti, riots in relatively stable countries such as Egypt are very worrisome. In fact, even in North America, many are choosing between healthful food and rent for the first time in their lives.

But, could this be a sign of even graver things to come. It is a fact that the price of petroleum, both in terms of carbon dioxide emissions and market value, is going to rise. Even if there were an unlimited supply of the oil, the consequences of not curbing the use of these fuels will be simply unimaginable.

We Can Contribute Our Part

What can we do? It’s not expected to get any better unless something drastic happens to change the world’s dependence on oil. People are dependant on trucks to bring groceries and goods and on oil to get them back and forth to work and to their kids’ soccer games in their big fancy SUVs.

What else can we do? Not everyone can afford to switch to a hybrid today but really, we need to consider making changes now in order to lighten the load. Get a more efficient car as soon as we can, walk some more, car pool and buy groceries and products locally. Localized shopping is vital for change.

One of the most frustrating and potentially dangerous aspects of climate change is the way in which one failing component of the Earth’s ecosystems can lead to an acceleration of the warming process. This process is known as carbon cycle.

Carbon Cycles Caused By Beetles

One carbon cycle is found in British Columbia where there is an outbreak of mountain pine beetles due to warmer climate. These beetles not only destroy the forest but also release carbon into the atmosphere. When trees are killed, they no longer are able to take carbon from the atmosphere. When dead trees start to decompose, carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere.

The outbreak has affected about 33 million acres of lodgepole pines. Bark beetles also have killed huge swaths of pines in the western United States, including about 2,300 square miles (6,000 square kilometers) of trees in Colorado. This could exacerbate the global warming that contributed to the outbreaks in the first place.

Carbon Cycle Turn Carbon Sink Into Carbon Source

Carbon cycle is a vicious cycle created by a warming planet. Carbon cycle turns “carbon sinks” which absorb carbon dioxide than they emit into “carbon source”. This causes planet to be even warmer, thus allowing more creatures such as beetles to survive farther north and at higher elevations. The long-term effect, with computer modeling, estimated that the maximum annual release of 20 megatons of carbon, as compared to the 30 megatons of carbon produced by forest fires.

Carbon Cycle From Ice Melt

Another example is in the very northern parts of Scandinavia and Siberian Russia. In areas that had been built upon permafrost, foundations are sinking and collapsing as this long solid ground is now becoming a muddy swamp. Thousands of years of accumulated peats are being digested by decomposition bacteria. This process emits a massive “belch” of carbon dioxide that had been previously sequestered.

Previous Arctic ice melt data modeling are no longer applicable as the change is now accelerating even faster than the most recent models would suggest. More importantly, as polar ice caps melt, the reflectivity of the Earth (or albedo to meteorologists) decreases, allowing sun’s rays to be even more effective.

If the estimates of reserves made by oil producing countries can be taken as very rough estimates, it would mean that only that we are only experiencing half of the atmospheric damages by carbon dioxide emissions. It is of utmost urgency that sustainable development on alternative energy be given priority.

Worldwide Escalating Demand For Energy

Discoveries of oil well worldwide certainly have not kept pace with the escalating demand. Alternative energies such as solar and bio-fuels are into their full speed of development and deployment.

There are two general types of bio-fuels: those that are grown from virgin crops and those that are recycled from used oils. Recycled bio-diesel was the preferred choice in the very early days of bio-diesel, when it was rarely seen outside of college town. Nearly all fuels were collected from fast food restaurants that were more than willing to get rid of used fry oil. Through a very simple chemical process, these fry oil can be converted into useful fuel.

Recycling Used Oils Is No Longer The Mainstream

However, now that everyone is seeing the true value of these used oils, many places will actually hold on to it and sell it to an oil dealer for a small profit. You still can pull up to restaurants and ask if they’re got any extra fry oil to get rid of. Even when you do manage to get the fry oil free of chunky bits and ready to burn, you will still run the risk of being queried by the road tax department on the levy on all petroleum fuels.

For this reason, the main research and application area on bio-fuels now is on virgin oils, though some used oil is mixed in at most facilities.

Fresh water supplies are sure to be strained in coming years. This is due, at least in part, to climate change as well as the sharp increase in urban populations.

Water Conservations For Sustainable Development

In arid countries availability of water has always been the main constrain in their growth. Whereas in other countries, massive projects that deliver water to millions have actually created more water problems as the populations take water for granted and use more water than was sustainable.

In developing cities where populations are increasing, supply of water is as important as the quality of water. Sustainable development seeks to conserve water in both the design of buildings and the behavior of the people within them. People have to be educated to conserve water for the interest of themselves, their nation and the whole world. For instance, everyone should cultivate the habit of collecting water instead of using fresh water to irrigate their garden. As for building design, low-flow fixtures in bathroom should be the priority consideration.

Water Audit

In business or in household, water audit should be seriously considered. Simple water audit can be done by anyone. Whereas in the case of sizable business operations, a professional water audit could be engaged. Usually the recommendations resulting in water audit can save a great deal of water and money by implementing what usually amounts to simple changes in procedure. For example, it may be simply installing cisterns for water storage. For businesses that absolutely rely upon water, a good investment on water distillery or nursery should also be considered.
